East 54th Street Recreation Center Reopens
The East 54th Street Recreation Center reopened in December after
a three-year, $6 million “re-do” that returns the historic 1911
building to its original luster – and adds some welcome new touches.
Former members of the Center will be dazzled by the results. The
lobby alone solicits a “wow.” Its famous vaulted tile ceiling by
Guastavino, for years covered with heavy coats of paint, has been
restored to its early 20th century sparkle. The dark painted
woodwork has been replaced with light paneling and furniture. And a
new floor-to-ceiling glass wall now opens up the lobby to the
Center’s huge 60-foot by 54-foot swimming pool that is crowned by
still more dramatic Guastavino vaulted ceilings.
All facilities have been refurbished: the pool, gymnasium,
jogging track and fitness room. An aerobics room and computer
resource center have been added, along with new air conditioning,
electrical and plumbing systems throughout.
Located at 348 East 54th Street, the Center – like virtually all
of the City’s 33 recreation centers – was originally opened in the
early 20th century as a bathhouse for the working classes. The
centers are run by the Parks Department.
Membership is very affordable. A one-year membership for adults
is $75; 55 years of age and older, $10; under 18, free. There may be
extra fees for special programs. For more information, call
