The Turtle Bay Association spearheaded the redesign
of the park known as Dag Hammarskjold Plaza, but we could not have
prevailed these many years were it not for the unfailing support
of Community Board 6, our neighboring community organizations, NYC
Parks Commissioner Henry Stern, park architect George Vellonakis,
and our elected officials. Hats off to the die-hard TBA board members
who worked long and hard to see this park through to completion
and to those TBA members who wrote letters, signed petitions, attended
hearings, and despite setbacks, refused to give up. With the removal
of the construction fence, the park will be returned to the public
a half-acre larger to measure a total of 1.5 acres, magnificently
transformed from a barren plaza to an elegant promenade and garden,
befitting its location as a gateway to the United Nations.
