Fun at MacArthur: Youngsters Flock to the Playground
By: Marie-Louise Handal

Young residents of Turtle Bay have been flocking in record numbers to
MacArthur Playground – a beautiful gem of a park virtually hidden at the intersection of East 49th Street and the FDR Drive.  Thanks to park volunteers’ continuing efforts to upgrade and maintain the playground, several hundred children actively use the park’s facilities on a daily basis.  Parks Department workers, in turn, have responded by keeping the playground equipment in good working order and planting new trees and shrubs in the previously fallow tree and flower beds.  Each new renovation seems to attract more and more people.  This past summer, park usage more than doubled from three years ago.

The big turtle is a playground favorite.

A favorite spot in the park for many of the children is  is a 20-foot diameter play area surrounding a large water spray.  Children come prepared with swimsuits and other beach gear to enjoy hot summer days in the cool sparkling water.  Swings, slides and a large playscape provide many more opportunities for fun – and good exercise.

Good exercise!

On any given day, dozens of children also congregate to play in the sandbox.  Not only is it kept clean and replenished with fine sand by Turtle Bay volunteers, but it also contains a good supply of donated toys, buckets and shovels.  On the other side of the park, an oversized concrete turtle, Turtle Bay’s signature, is a favorite for many of the smaller children who climb the turtle, or color it with sidewalk chalk.

Making “sand pies” in the sandbox.

The community spirit of the neighborhood families frequenting the playground contributes to the condition of the park and its facilities.

The playscape is a centerpiece of the park.

Each summer’s peak season is ushered in with a performance by the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre, presented by the New York City Parks Department and sponsored by the Turtle Bay Association. This year’s presentation, on Tuesday, June 15,  was “Sleeping Beauty,” with 350 people attending.

Volunteers stock the sandbox with plastic shovels and buckets – which also make good hats!

Marie-Louise Handal is chairman of the TBA Parks Committee.  She asks anyone interested in volunteering to work with the committee to call the TBA office.
