A Birthday Garden Party For Kate!
By Sue Diamond
The clouds parted and the sun smiled down on Saturday afternoon,
May 10, as about 100 Turtle Bay neighbors convened at a garden party
sponsored by The Friends of Dag Hammarskjold Plaza and the TBA in
the Plaza park to celebrate Katharine Hepburn's 96th birthday. Located
at the gateway to the UN, the park has six sparkling fountains and
a beautiful garden dedicated to the accomplishments of Miss Hepburn,
both a renowned actress and an active Turtle Bay friend of conservation.
Appropriately the festivities took place there amid the rumble of
a mulch truck and the activity of the Friends' gardeners.
Compliments were showered on Katharine Hepburn, Turtle Bay residents
and the Friends of Dag Hammarskjold Plaza by State Assemblyman Jonathan
Bing, local café owner Mark Grossich, TBA President Bill
Curtis, and Park Friends President Michael Butler who told of the
park's sequoia tree, a symbol that will grow to watch over and inspire
our area for generations to come.
Norman Curtis performed lively songs and golden oldies on his electronic
keyboard while guests signed a huge heart-shaped birthday card,
relaxed in chairs, enjoyed a yummy birthday cake for the honoree
and read the display of Kate's movie posters and wise sayings. She
once wrote, "I never lose sight of the fact that just being
is fun." The atmosphere at this event certainly evoked those
words. For Turtle Bay, Katharine Hepburn will always be Woman of
the Year!
