| An
SOS For Our Neighborhood Library
By Lillian Gold, Volunteer for the Cathedral
Branch Library
As springtime arrives, how wonderful it will be to be sitting
in Katharine Hepburn Garden reading a good book. But if the estimated
projected city budget goes through as is, there may be 300,000 fewer
books. Thus, this SOS is for our neighborhood library – The
Terence Cardinal Cooke Cathedral Branch of The New York Public Library,
located below ground at the northwest corner of 50th Street and
Lexington Avenue. At our last financial meeting of the Borough Advocacy
Network, I was told deep cuts in public funding were due to the
ongoing fiscal crisis. In response, the library has begun a 3-year
Emergency Campaign. The library is asking all of us to help restore
these funds to the budget, by writing our elected officials in support
of the library, and showing support with an individual contribution
of $17 (the average price of a new book). The library has self-addressed
envelopes and donation forms – please pick one up. For more
information, contact the Cathedral Branch Librarian, Jay Barksdale,
560 Lexington Avenue, NY, NY 10022, 212-752-3824, cathedral@nypl.org.
Thank you.
